"Why should I teach my child to see color?" It is a sincere question and goes against what society has taught as "conscious parenting" for years. But, teaching your child not to see color is harmful. It may not allow them to see racism or the unconscious biases prevalent in society. Inclusivity is not only about everyone being equal, but being able to see diversity and understanding the beauty behind everyone's heritage.

Recap:

In order for children to empathize, they need to be able to understand the experience of walking in an individual's' shoes. If they do not see the biological differences, how will they learn to understand the issues others face? Therefore, seeing color is increasing awareness and preparing them to live in a global society.

Awareness is a big part of conscious growth and in order to be more aware, children need to be able to see both the similarities and differences in everyone, especially color. Otherwise they may overlook biases and preconceived notions that hurt others. In order to wholy empathize, children need to see the person as a whole - culture and history included.

We can teach children to self reflect and encourage questions relating to race. They can do journal exercises like "How would I feel about this if I were native american? How different would my childhood be if I grew up in this community?" Children can ask each other questions to learn about daily lifestyle like "What did you have for breakfast?" "What is something you wish you had but never got the opportunity to do?" "What made you sad today?" This will help them to deeply understand other perspectives.

Let us teach our children to truly notice the struggles black americans face and empower them to enact change.

Together we can see color!

With Infinite Love,

Gahmya
